Değişim süreçlerinde ortaya çıkan bir kavram olarak muhafazakârlık, değişime radikal bir karşı çıkıştan ziyade belli başlı ilkelerle uyum sağlamayı esas alan bir düşünce üslubudur. Modernleşmeyi kendi tecrübelerinin ötesinde taklit yoluyla hayata geçiren Batı dışı toplumlar, kendi geleneksel değerleriyle Batı’dan aktarılan yenilikler arasındaki çatışmaları muhafazakâr bir yaklaşımla sentezlemeye çabalar. Türk modernleşmesinin de böyle bir tavırla başlayıp bugünlere uzandığını söylemek mümkündür. 1884 doğumlu Halide Edip Adıvar, Osmanlı İmparatorluğundan Türkiye Cumhuriyetine geçiş sürecindeki en büyük kırılmalara şahit olmuş bir kadın aydın olarak siyasi ve sosyal anlamda hızla Batılılaşan Türk toplumunun çatışmalarına hemen her sahada çözüm üretmeye çalışmıştır. Yetişme koşulları itibariyle muhafazakâr bir kimlik kazanan Halide Edip, kadın algısının değiştiği dönemde yazı hayatına başlamış ve modernleşmeyi bilhassa kadının dönüşümüne dair bir mesele olarak yorumlamıştır. O, modernleşmeyle birlikte kadının bireyleşmesi, sosyal/siyasal hayata katılımı gibi meseleleri gündeme getirmiş, diğer taraftan yenileşen kadının aynı zamanda aile içindeki geleneksel rollerini muhafaza etmesi gerektiği görüşüyle ideal bir Doğu-Batı sentezi kurmayı amaçlamıştır. İlk dönem romanlarının kadın karakterlerini bu çizgide kurgulayan Halide Edip, modernleşmeyle değişen kadın algısına yön vermeye çalışmıştır. Bu çalışmada Halide Edip’in kadın merkezinde gelişen Raik’in Annesi, Seviyye Talip, Handan ve Yeni Turan adlı romanlarındaki kadın karakterler dikkate alınarak Batılılaşma sonrası değişen kadının ne ölçüde bireyleşebildiği, bu sürecin gelenekle hangi noktalarda çatıştığı tartışılacak ve yazarın alternatif olarak idealize ettiği kadınların muhafazakâr düşünceyle ilişkisi değerlendirilecektir.
As a concept emerging in the processes of change, conservation is a style of thought based on adapting to certain main principles rather than a radical opposition to change. The non-Western societies, which implement modernization beyond their own experiences through imitation, try to synthesize the conflict between their traditional values and the innovations transmitted from the West with a conservative approach. It is possible to say that the modernization of Turkey began with this attitude and extended to the present day. Born in 1884, Halide Edip Adıvar, a woman who has witnessed the greatest breaks in the transition from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic of Turkey, has tried to clearly resolve the conflicts of the rapidly Western Turkish society in a political and social sense. Halide Edip, who has gained a conservative identity according to the grown conditions, began his writing life in the period of the change of female perception and interpreted modernization as a matter of the transformation of the female. She, along with modernization, has brought up issues such as the individuality of the woman, the participation in social/political life, and on the other hand, the idea that the renewed woman should also preserve her traditional roles in the family is to create an ideal Eastern-West synthesis. The first time the female characters of the romanes were set in this line, Halide Edi and tried to direct the female perception that changed with modernization. In this study, considering the female characters of Raik's Mother, Level Talip, Handan and New Turan in his novels that develop in Halide Edip's women's center, the extent to which the woman can be individualized after Westernization will be discussed in which points this process conflicts with the tradition and the relationship with the conservative thought of the women that the author is idealized as an alternative will be assessed.
