Geleneksel sanatlar içerisinde yer alan kalem işi sanatı mimari yapılarımızın iç mekân tezyini için her dönemde kullanılmıştır. Tezyinat tarihi içerisinde değerlendirdiğimizde sivil veya dini mimaride olsun hemen her yapıda, iç mekânların kubbe, tavan ve duvar yüzeyleri gibi alanların bezenmesinde tercih edilen yöntem olmuştur. Kalem işi sanatı mimaride uygulandıkları zeminin malzemelerine göre isimlendirilmiştir. Bunlar sıva üzeri, ahşap üzeri, deri ve bez üzeri, taş ve mermer üzeri kalem işi olarak bilinmektedir. Sözünü ettiğimiz bu tekniklere ait örnekleri sivil mimarinin yanında özellikle dini mimarimizin ana yapısı olan camilerde çok fazla görmek mümkündür. Günümüzde değişen şartlar ve gelişen inşa teknolojileri sayesinde, klasik cami mimarimizde de farklı boyutta örnekler ortaya çıkmaya başlamıştır. Yapı hacmindeki fiziki değişiklikler, beraberinde sanatçıları iç mekân tezyinatında da değişim arayışlarına sevk etmiştir. Söz konusu çağın ve teknolojinin getirdiği imkânların tezyinat alanında kullanılmasıyla kalem işi sanatında da bir takım yeniliklerin vücûd bulduğu gözlemlenmektedir. Klasik cami mimarimizde kullanılagelen kalem işi tekniğine ilave bugün farklı malzeme ve tekniklerle yapılan “ naht tekniği” kalem işleri almıştır. Bu uygulamanıngüzel örneklerinden biri Ankara Ahmet Hamdi Akseki Camii’nde görülmektedir.
