Abstract:

The objective of this research study is to examine the history education and teaching in the popular history magazine of 1950s, "Resimli Tarih Mecmuası” (lit. Illustrated History Magazine). In the study, documentary research technique was used, which is among qualitative research methods. The research universe of the study is comprised of 23 issues of this magazine. Content analysis and descriptive analysis were used in the analysis of the data obtained in the study. One of the important results that the study revealed was that, history, according to the magazine, is to understand the past and present. History is an entertaining and educating means. Besides, the magazine defines history as the activities of the great men. Since the magazine took into consideration the letters from the readers, it is understood that the popular history content of the magazine was determined by its audience. In the narration of the male heroes in the magazine, the emphasis is on winning glories in the wars and fighting heroically. As per the female heroes, they were featured rather with their beauties and attracting the male heroes. It was understood in the study that the magazine had a pedagogical objective and involved history teaching methods. The importance that the magazine attached to history teaching methods is understood from the author cadre of the magazine, which was comprised of history teachers, and the audience of the magazine, an important part of which was comprised of students and teachers. The result that the study put forth in the final analysis is that popular history magazines can be used in history education and teaching. However, while implementing this method, the ability should be acquired by the students to differentiate the mythos and the facts in the popular history magazines.
