EARTHQUAKE PERCEPTION IN KAHRAMANMARAŞ ABSTRACT Kahramanmaraş city, selected as the study area is located at the intersection of the Anatolian and Arabian tectonic plates. This area is under the effect of the Eastern Anatolia Fault and the Dead Sea Fault zones. Due to this active fault zone that come from south extending to the northeast and the fragile tectonic structure, the city is located on the first degree earthquake zone. The East Anatolian Fault that is effective in the seismicity of the city begins from east of Bingöl - Karlıova and reaches to west of Aksu river through Gölbaşı - Pazarcık, and also the Dead Sea Fault intersects with East Anatolian Fault near Turkoglu - Narlı. That Kahramanmaraş hasn’t, located in the first degree earthquake zone, experienced a devastating earthquake for a long time and due to increasing population, industrial and settlement activities against high risk of earthquake it is most likely to be negatively affected by a possıble earthquake.This research was conducted in Kahramanmaraş that is located in the first degree earthquake zone and also wasn’t observed major devastating earthquake in long period to reveal the point of public view against the high earthquake risk, how people perceive the earthquake risk and whether they have enough awareness about earthquakes.For this objective, a survey form has been created to be implemented in the framework of the local people, the survey was carried out and the results were evaluated by appropriate statistical methods in SPSS Programme.
