Abstract:

Vitamin D, also called sunlight vitamins, plays an important role not only in the health of the skeletal system of children and adults, but also in chronic diseases, including autoimmune diseases, malignancy and cardiovascular diseases. It also plays a role in the prevention of infections due to its influence on the immune system. Approximately 95% of body’s Vitamin D requirement is synthesized from 7-dehydrocholesterol in the skin via sunlight ultraviolet rays. Nutrients such as oily fish, egg yolk, green onions, milk and broccoli are rich in vitamin D, but none of them contain enough vitamin D to meet daily necessities. Therefore, it is necessary to benefit from the sun. Vitamin D, which is a fat-soluble vitamin, plays a role in the regulation of calcium and phosphorus blood levels and the maintenance of bone turnover by increasing the absorption of calcium and phosphate from the intestines. Therefore, Vitamin D provides adequate levels of calcium and phosphorus for bone development in children and for bone health and mineralization in adults. Rickets disease occurs in children with vitamin D deficiency, while its deficiency in adults may lead to osteoporosis. Vitamin D deficiency also results in secondary hyperparathyroidism, disrupting the calcium balance. Furthermore, the risk of diabetes, hypertension and myocardial infarction may increase in vitamin D deficiency. D hypervitaminosis can only develop if overdose drugs are used. As a matter of fact, no vitamin D intoxication has been detected even in lifeguards working in the sun exposed to the sun throughout the day. Sunscreen creams may prevent vitamin D synthesis. For this reason, they should not be used. Also, doing outdoor exercises instead of indoor halls will undoubtedly be more beneficial for our health. In conclusion, we need to take advantage of the sun in order to reach an adequate vitamin D level for our health.
