M.Ö. 1950-1730 yılları arasında Kuzey Mezopotamya bölgesinde yer alan Asurlu tüccarlar Orta Anadolu’ya ticaret yapmak için geliyorlardı. Bu ticaretin iyi işlemesi için, Asurlu tüccarlar Anadolu’da yerel beyliklerle antlaşmalar yaparak, bir ticaret ağının temellerini atmış oluyorlardı. Anadolu’da ticaret yapacak olan Asurlu tüccarlar, yerel toplumun iki grubuyla karşılaşmaktaydılar. Bunlardan birincisi yöneticinin ve onun memurlarının bulunduğu yerli saraylardı. Tüccarlar bu grup ile daha çok hukuksal ve finansal konularda iletişime geçmekteydiler. Asurluların karşılaştıkları bir diğer yerli grup ise, halk tabakasıydı. Dönemin başlarında ayrı mahallelerde yaşayan ve yerli halkla fazla iç içe olmayan Asurlular, zamanla yerli kadınlar ile evlilik yaparak ve yerliler ile ticari faaliyetleri artırarak, yerel topluma daha fazla entegre olmuşlardı.
