Abstract:

Marine pollution has recently been one of the most important components of environmental pollution in the world. In this study, marine and environmental pollution resulting from routine ship operations, removal activities of environmental pollution and recycling procedures and related legislation carried out in Turkey are discussed. In this context, ship-based wastes and recovery procedures are evaluated. Furthermore the roles and responsibilities of port authorities and flag states, which play an important role under the umbrella International Maritime Organization (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee, are evaluated in the study.     Reception facilities receive wastes under the categories of International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) Annex I, IV and V. The study mainly aims utilization of a Turkish waste reception facility, which has an important role of delivering wastes through shipping industry. The waste recycling and other related processes are evaluated within the context of national and international legislation. Economic benefit as well as considerable reductions in environmental pollution can be achieved through the delivery of marine wastes to reception facilities and elimination of waste by appropriate methods. Development of reception facilities in Turkey plays a crucial role in terms of marine environment and economic benefits.
