Türkçe 6. yüzyıldan beri yazı ile takip edilebilen bir dil olmasına ve Büyük Türkçe Sözlük’te söz, deyim, terim ve ad olmak üzere toplam 616.767 söz bulunmasına rağmen Türkçenin bu durumu okul çağındaki çocuklara yeterince anlatılamamaktadır. Okul çağındaki çocukların ana dili bilincine vakıf olmaları ve Türkçenin zenginliklerini öğrenebilmeleri için başta Türkçe derslerindeki etkinlikler olmak üzere diğer eğitim öğretim faaliyetlerinde Türkçenin zengin söz varlığı ve diğer anlatım olanaklarının öğretilmesi gerekmektedir. “5. Sınıf Türkçe ders kitaplarında sözcük öğretimi için etkinlikler Türkçenin zenginliklerini kavratacak biçimde tasarlanmış mıdır?” problem cümlesine dayanan bu çalışmada sözcük öğretimi etkinliklerinin ana dili bilinci sağlamaları için nasıl düzenlenmeleri gerektiği gösterilmiştir
