Abstract:

This study aims to identify the candidates for science knowledge understanding of some basic concepts on strength and movement subjects and the conceptual errors related to these subjects. In the 2016-2017 educational year, 92 students who studied in the second class of the Atatürk University Science Information Teaching, 20 questions consisting of the strength and movement success test (KHBT) was applied. After the success test, a semi-configured interview with seven students was conducted to determine the causes of the conceptual errors that students had. In the analysis of the test applied in the study, simple statistical methods were used and presented in a table, calculating the correct response rate of each question in the test applied by students. The percentage of the answers that students give to all the questions in the class was determined and the conceptual errors were identified. Conceptual errors with different levels of prevalence among students within the research scope have been detected. This study shows that students have numerous and quite common conceptual errors in relation to the issues of strength and movement. A number of recommendations have been made to researchers, educators and programmes on the removal of the detected conceptual errors.
