Abstract:

Abstract:

Uighurs (A.D 744-840) followed Kokturks among those who gained their independence and showed up in the course of Central Asian Turkic History. Uighurs, at the end of their about-100-year rule that was based in Otuken, were defeated by Kyrgyzs and forced to migrate into various cities. One branch of them headed toward Eastern Turkistan, some of them were settled in Kansu region and gradually embraced sedentary lifestyle thereby giving up on migrant-settler way. In the course of time Uighurs, having adopted a variety of new faiths, produced a lot of works related to those belief systems. As a consequence of a rising need that is stemmed from their cultural transition and the new concepts that are brought about by it, they started deriving new words and forming compounds out of them within Old Uighur Turkish. In this article, we will examine one of the Buddhist peritexts in Old Uighur Turkish; the text titled Kuanşi İm Pusar which is in the 25th chapter of the work, named as Asil Dinin Nilüfer Çiçeği (The Lotus of the Noble Faith) written in sudur genre, in the context of the derivation of compound words in the Old Uighur Turkish period, the structures of compound verbs; and they will be classified by their types of composition. This article, on a large scale, is predicated upon Şinasi Tekin’s work that was produced in accordance with a comparative study of four copies in Old Uighur Turkish and titled Uygurca Metinler I (The Texts in Uighur Turkish) Kuanşi İm Pusar (Ses İşiten Allah - Allah Who Hears) that is emitted in the year 1960 at Atatürk University. Having come forward either in terms of structure or meaning for the first time in the Old Uighur Turkish period, those compound verbs are such elements of language that enrich and strengthen the vocabulary of the Turkish language, along with being signifiers of its historical development.
