Özellikle gelişmiş ülkelerde, tıp ve teknoloji alanındaki ilerlemelerin de etkisiyle, yaşlı nüfusun toplam nüfus içindeki oranı artmıştır. Sadece sanayileşmiş ülkelerde değil, gelişmekte olan ülkelerde de benzer bir durum yaşanmaya başlanmıştır. Yaşlı ve yaşlılık kavramları tartışmalı bir konudur. Yaşlılık algısı, topluma, zamana, eğitim düzeyine, ekonomik duruma göre değişiklik gösterebileceği gibi, cinsiyete, fizyolojik ve psikolojik duruma göre de değişiklik gösterebilir. Zira bazı toplumlarda yaşlılık olağan bir süreç olarak değerlendirilirken, bazılarında ise bir sorun olarak görülmektedir. Öğretide yaşlanma olgusunun kronolojik, biyolojik, psikolojik ve sosyal yönleri olduğu ve bu bağlamda çok boyutlu bir şekilde meydana geldiği ifade edilmektedir Kesin bir yaşlılık sınırı belirlemek mümkün değildir. Especially in developed countries, with the influence of progress in the field of medicine and technology, the proportion of the elderly population in the total population has increased. The same situation has not only begun in industrialized countries, but also in developing countries. The concept of age and age is controversial. The perception of aging can vary according to society, time, education level, economic condition, and can also vary according to gender, physiological and psychological condition. For in some societies, ageing is considered a normal process, while in some it is considered a problem. In teaching, it is stated that the fact of aging has chronological, biological, psychological and social aspects and that it occurs in this context in a multi-dimensional way, it is impossible to determine a certain age limit. As a person’s biological age may vary from chronological age, health status, gender, environment and working conditions may also affect the biological age positively or negatively. Therefore, it is quite difficult to determine a precise start for ageing. Ageing is considered as a social risk as well as being a biological risk, because the individual may lose partly or entirely the workforce during this period.
