The aim of this research is to investigate general professional competency perception of teachers who work in primary schools. The research has sought answers to the main question: “how do teachers perceive themselves in terms of general professional competency?” and to the minor questions: “Do teachers' perceptions of general professional competency vary significantly according to gender, branch, length of service, higher education programs they graduated and in-service training variables?” The universe of the research includes teachers who work in public primary schools in the province of Adıyaman. The research has been conducted on the scanning model and data have been collected by using survey form developed by the researcher in line with the expert opinion depending on the criteria of schoolteaching general competency which were determined by the cooperation of Higher Education Institution and Ministry of National Education. In the analysis of the data; arithmetic mean, standard deviation and frequency distribution calculations have been used. The findings of the research have concluded that teachers' general schoolteaching competency perception are at “good” levels in general. It is also found that there is no significant relation between perception levels and gender and in-service training whereas significant relations are determined for branch, length of service and higher education programs from which they graduated. It has been recommended that education institutions should use 'general professional criteria as the baseline in the process of training teacher candidates and in-service training.
