Eğitim öğretim sürecinin temel unsurlarından birisi de araç ve çeşitli materyallerdir. Ders araç ve gereçleri ile öğretim materyalleri, öğretme-öğrenme sürecini destekleyen, öğretimi daha etkin ve kalıcı hale getiren yardımcılardır. Sosyal Bilgiler derslerinde konu ve kazanımlara uygun, kullanılan yöntem ve teknikleri destekleyen birçok materyalden yararlanmak mümkündür. Öğretme-öğrenme süreci tereddütsüz sadece öğretmenin anlattığı bilgilerden ibaret değildir. Özellikle Sosyal Bilgiler derslerinde tarih ve coğrafya konuları işlenirken, derslerin sadece düz anlatımla yeterli olamayacağı herkes tarafından bilinmektedir. Dolayısıyla öğretmenler çeşitli öğretim materyalleri kullanarak dersi akıcı hale getirebilmelidirler. Bu çalışmada Amasya ilinde görev yapan Sosyal Bilgiler öğretmenlerinin, Sosyal Bilgiler derslerinde materyal kullanma düzeylerini belirlemeye çalıştık. Betimsel yöntem kullanılarak yapılan çalışmada Sezer ve arkadaşları (2005) tarafından hazırlanan anket formu, geliştirilerek hedef öğretmen kitlesine uygulanmıştır. Anket sonucunda Amasya ilinde görev yapan Sosyal Bilgiler öğretmenlerinin materyal kullanma düzeyleri ile gerekli teknolojik materyallerin kullanılamama sebeplerini ortaya koymayı hedefledik. Öğretmenlerin en yaygın olarak kullandıkları materyallerin harita, bilgisayar, projeksiyon, internet ve kaynak kitaplar olduğu görülmüştür. Birçok gerekli materyalin de okullarda olmadığı, ya da yeteri kadar bulunmadığı da ifade edilmiştir. Sonuç olarak materyal kullanımının istenilen düzeye çıkarılabilmesi için öneriler sunulmuştur.
