Abstract:

Values constitute the building block of a society, thus the nations have to preserve their values in order to retain their existinces. Remembering the values and transferring them to the life by enriching their content may build up a power source for the nation. Therefore, being continuous of the material and spiritual values which are kept in memory of nation is very important. It is necessary to hand the values which are very crucial for a nation down from generation to generation by repeating in memories. This only materializes by means of education. Today, values teaching is carried out under different headings.This paper analyzes the book of Kutadgu Bilig which transcripted by Reşid Rahmeti Arat into modern Turkish, taking 20 values in the curriculum of the Social Studies Course 6. and 7. classes into consideration. It has been determined that all those values exist in Kutadgu Bilig except from the values of independence, freedom and patriotism. The values of fairness, honesty, being scientific, helpfulness and sensibility are the most emphasized values in the book. The values can be teached the students by using the couplets reflecting the values in the Turkish courses
