Abstract:

In the early 20th century, the lives of about 60 million Muslims in India were quite difficult. For centuries in the territory where they lived in the ruling position, with the British's overtaking of the rule, they experienced a great loss of prestige and had entered into a political or economicly difficult process. The Muslim people and the Ulema, considered the main responsible of the Great Sipahi Rebellion of 1857, were exposed to the increasing pressure of the British. Some of the Muslims who are looking for a way to get out under these conditions have thought that traditional Islamic approaches could not be a deva to the problems of Indian Muslims and have shown some ideas for reform in Islam. These statements outside the traditional patterns, as they led to various reactions among the Muslim people, have also found responses among some missionaries. To understand how these reformist movements arise in India are perceived by the missionaries, it will be appropriate to look at the statements presented at the missionary conferences toward the Muslim world held in 1906 in Cairo and in 1911 in Leknev, connected with India. Since these conferences are closed circular organizations where missionaries can openly present their views, there is no doubt about the accuracy and validity of the information provided. The missionaries who presented about India at these conferences evaluated the new Islamic approaches in India from their own windows. In this article, Protestant missionaries are 20 of the Muslims living in India. The comments on the situation at the beginning of the century have been discussed in various aspects.
