Abstract:

In this study, preservice science and social studies teachers’ opinions and attitudes towards socioscientific issues and value judgments about global citizenship was examined in terms of various variables. The sample of the study consisted of 558 (395 female, 163 male) preservice teachers enrolled in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades at two different universities in the departments of science education (219 female, 62 male) and social sciences (217 female, 60 male) education. In the study, data were collected through “Character and Values as Global Citizens Assesment Questionnarie” and “Attitudes Toward Socioscientific Issues Questionnaire”. Results showed that the department that preservice teachers are enrolled in has no significant effect on preservice teachers’ attitudes and opinions towards SSIs, while grade level and gender has. With increasing grade level, attitude get more positive. Moreover, female students had more positive attitudes towards socioscientific issues than male students, whereas female students had more positive value judgments about global citizenship than male students. In addition, it has been concluded that there is a positive relationship between preservice teachers attitudes and opinions about socioscientific issues and global citizenship character and value judgments
