Abstract:

The capacity of green spaces in the city and its surroundings to create healthy living areas depends on the best design and planning of these spaces. The green spaces that enable their active or passive recreational activities such as the park are the places often spent time, which have a direct impact on the individual development of people. From this point of view, parks should be designed not only by design based on the choice of space, but to the user group they address, users should be identified, needs, demands and expectations should be met. Thus, the parks will be able to meet the needs of the section they address, so they will perform their functions in a healthy way. The survey was conducted in accordance with this goal, with 400 participants (60%) in 35 parks located in the city of Giresun. 8 men; 39.3 percent women). The study found that the park users, aged 30 and under, were students from the high school and university level, the income group of 1,000 TL. From the results of the survey, the common characteristics of the city man (park user), needs, satisfaction levels, parks use characteristics were identified by statistical analysis techniques (frequency distribution, multiple response analysis, ki-quarter test). According to the findings compared with similar studies, mostly in the summer months, weekends, in the park areas visited by friends or family for 1-2 hours in the afternoon, the users are far from safety concerns, the natural environments they desire are shortly in the expectation of a better park. Parks are classified as easily accessible by users, but in terms of satisfaction from parks, they are assessed at the "mediate" level. As a result, there are recommendations that can help local governments or designers to improve the existing parks if necessary in the future.

In this respect, parks should be designed not only with a design based on site selection but also intended for user groups they address, and their users should be defined, and meet the need, demand, expectations. In this way, parks will be able to meet the needs of user groups they address, and in consequence of carrying out function in a healthy way. For this purpose, the survey study was conducted with 400 participants (60.8% male; 39.3% female) in 35 parks located in the city of Giresun. In this study, it was determined that the park users were students who at the age of 30 below, education of level high school and university and income level 1000 TL and below. Based on the results of the survey, the common characteristics, needs, satisfaction levels, park usage characteristics of the urban people (park user) were determined by statistical analysis techniques (frequency distributions, multiple response analysis, pearson’s chi-square test). According to findings which compare with similar study results, it was determined that users want natural environments away from safety concerns at park areas which are visited by friends or family for 1-2 hours during summer months, midday, weekends, in short, they want better parks. Parks are described as easily accessible by users, but they are evaluted “intermediate” in terms of satisfaction. As a result, it has been developed proposals that can help local authorities and designers for the future and the improvement of existing parks.
