Savaş ve Millî Mücadele sırasında, özellikle Anadolu'daki Amerikan okullarının bir çoğu kapanmış bulunuyordu. 1927 yılında, bu okulların durumu şöyledir9: İzmir'de Milletlerarası Yüksek Öğretim Enstitüsü (International College - İzmir) ile, 8 ilk ve orta okul düzeyinde Amerikan kurumu mevcuttur. Bu 8 okul şunlardır: Adana, Merzifon, İzmir, Tarsus ve Bursa ile İstanbul'da 3 tane okul. Bu okullar, 19. yüzyıl içinde, esas itibari ile misyoner kuruluşları tarafından ve Hıristiyanlığı yayma amacı ile açılmışlardı.
