Abstract:

This study opens and evaluates the comprehensive work of Fuat Sezgin, translated into Turkish, from Science and Technology in Islam (Vissenschaft und Technik im Islam) to discuss the concept of his "universal science history" and the reflections of the Renaissance history criticism in the context of scientific history. The rise of the United States in the twentieth century and the discussions on science history after the Second World War have moved to a universal dimension and, unlike many scientists, Fuat Sezgin preferred to do historical studies based on comparative facts instead of developing speculative objections. Sezgin’s studies have both changed the course of orientalistic information, and have created a curiosity about the conditions of Islamic science in the Middle Ages and New Age. In Islam, science and technology, as well as the theoretical and methodological analyses it develops, and the content of natural sciences and medical sciences it contains, is important because it provides the institutions they talk about and the tools they use. Sezgin’s work corresponds to a very effective and emerging stage in the transformation of modern European-centric scientific writing into an extended multi-scientific history.
