Abstract:

The underground rock tomb unearthed in the necropolis area of the city of Amisos, with its main space, burial niches and klines, has similar shape and construction features with the other underground rock tomb examples of the city. The tomb structure was explained in detail and supported with drawings so that the plan could be understood more clearly. Only terracotta amphorae, unguentarium and lagynos were found in the tomb. The in-situ positions of the finds in the tomb are visually presented by drawing them. While the unguentariums found in the tomb have two different forms as spindle and bag body, they also have various variants within themselves. The amphora, which has flat six forms, was evaluated in the light of similar examples. In addition, the periodical features of the grave finds were briefly emphasized, analogies were made and thus their dating was carried out. Among the finds, one unguentarium belongs to the Late Hellenistic Period, while the other finds are dated to the Roman Imperial Period. Thus, various inferences were made regarding the period in which the tomb was used, due to the discovery of finds belonging to two different periods. In particular, comments were made regarding the finding of a Late Hellenistic Period found together with the Roman Imperial Period finds. In addition, various evaluations were made about whether the open burial niches of the tomb were later reused. However, no bone remains belonging to treasure (or burials) were found in the burial niches and klines of the tomb. Only a very low density of bone fragments was observed in the main space, and some issues related to this situation were mentioned. As a result of the evaluation of various data in the tomb, the density of the finds in the tomb was determined by the Roman Imperial Period in AD. It highlights the 1st – 3rd century range. The tomb finds were evaluated as offering vessels used for libation for burial (or burials), and the tomb was dated to A.D. It is understood that it was used between the 1st and 3rd centuries. The aim of this study is not to make an assessment by making inferences on the tomb types or burial customs/traditions of the Ancient Greek - Roman world. The aim is to evaluate a tomb unearthed in the Amisos necropolis, together with its finds, and to bring it to light in terms of regional archeology
