Abstract:

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the color stability of silorane and dimethacrylate-based composite resin materials after immersion in different beverages for particular periods. MATERIALS AND METHOD: A silorane-based composite resin (Filtek Silorane; n=25) and a dimethacrylate-based composite resin (Alert; n=25) were used in this study. Fifty composite resin discs (8 mmx2 mm) were prepared from each material. Specimens were immersed in four staining solutions (tea, coffee, cola, red wine) and distilled water (control group; n=5). Color changes were measured with a spectrophotometer at baseline and after 1, 7, 15 and 30 days of immersion. Data were analyzed by using one way ANOVA, post-hoc Tukey HSD test and independent-samples t-test. A p-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: At all periods, the color change (ΔE) for the Alert groups immersed in tea, coffee or red wine, and for the Silorane groups immersed in red wine was ≥3.3. Among all drinks tested, maximal color change was caused by red wine (p<0.05). Regarding the composite resin materials, Alert exhibited more color change than Filtek Silorane did (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that the tested composite resin materials were susceptible to staining especially in red wine. Silorane-based composite resins are more resistant to external discoloration.
