Abstract:

The aim of this study is to examine the elements of love in the novel Huzur within the conceptual framework of time and space perception in the novel as a narrative form established by Mikhail Bakhtin and named “chronotope”. Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar’s novel Huzur which reflects both the political and cultural changes in recent history possesses the characteristic of effectively using elements of time and space. Therefore, it is a novel suitable for examination within the conceptual framework that is called “chronotope”. Bakhtin’s concept of chronotope, which is based on the unity of time and space in narrative genres and developed with inspiration from Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, is also in harmony with Bergson's concept of duration. This shows that a chronotopic reading is in harmony with the idea of infinity that Tanpınar aims to reach. In our study, chronotopes such as Istanbul, Ada vapuru (Island Ferry), boat, music, mansion, pier, waterfront mansion, apartment, living room, bedroom, mirror, garden, chest, threshold, stairs, and door were identified based on the theme of love. These chronotopes were examined in three groups under the titles of encounter, closeness, and threshold.
