Abstracten Literatürde oyunun, çocukların öncelikli veönemli işlerinden biri olduğu kabul edilmektedir. Bu çalışma okul çağı çocuklarının oyun kavramına ilişkin algılarının ve oyun etkinliklerine ilişkin tercihlerinin değerlendirilmesi amacıyla yürütülmüştür. Böylece eğitsel oyunların onlara daha fazla hitap edebilecek biçimde tasarlanabileceği varsayılmaktadır. Nitel olarak tasarlanan araştırma 2009-2010 öğretim yılında, 7-11 yaşları arasında, Konya ilinde bulunan bir ilköğretim okulunun, 1-5. sınıflarında öğrenim gören 20 kız ve 20 erkek (toplam 40) öğrencinin oyun tercihleri ve oyun kavramına ilişkin algılarının belirlenmesi yoluyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmanın sonuçları şöyle özetlenebilir. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunda yer alan çocukların sınıf seviyelerinin ve cinsiyetlerinin oyun kavramına ilişkin algılarında ve oyun oynama sebeplerinde etkili olduğu düşünülmemektedir. Sınıf seviyesi ve cinsiyet oyun tercihlerinde etkili bir faktördür.
