Abstract:

The aim of this research is to criticize the Turkish translation of the Grimm brothers' tales called “The Spirit in a Bottle”, which is one of the German folk tales that the Grimm brothers' have gathered under one book in order to immortalize modern German culture. The work used in this criticism is limited to the tale translation used in 100 classical works of the Ministry of National Education. In the analyzing of the texts, document analysis, which is known for its usefulness, was preferred as the research method. As the criticism criterion, one of the concepts of Common European framework of reference for languages (2020) known as “Mediation” was used. In the latest version of CEFR, the concept of "mediation" includes the written text translation steps which this research focuses on. According to these criterions: Intercultural expressions such as idioms, proverbs and German culture-specific structures that were translated into the target language were analyzed. Among the cultural structures identified in the target text, 9 examples were identified that did not meet the mediation criteria. Also, in these examples; In addition to erroneous mediation of cultural expressions from the main text, problems such as erroneous transfer of feelings, thoughts and meanings were also identified. According to the results of the research, it was concluded that the intercultural mediation activity was unsuccessful because the mediation criterion in the CEFR were violated.
