Abstract:

In the literature, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is used to calculate the activities of the units. The Malmquist Total Factor Productivity (TFP) index is an index used to measure the changes in the total factor productivity of units over time. This study aims to measure the effectiveness of private hospitals serving in metropolitan cities in Turkey between 2013-2018. The current study does not cover public hospitals across the country. In the study, the Malmquist TFP index was calculated by taking the total data of 498 private hospitals operating in 30 provinces between 2013 and 2018. In this way, changes in activities in unit and time dimensions were examined. As a result of the Malmquist Total Factor Productivity Index, it was seen that the total factor productivity of private hospitals decreased by 3.2% on average and the reason for this was technological change. On the other hand, when looking at the average over the years, the city whose efficiency decreased the most was Istanbul with a decrease of %2,1. The provinces with the highest increase in efficiency are Samsun and Mardin with increases of %5,7 and %5,3, respectively. While 2017 was the year with the highest change in total factor activities of hospitals with an increase of %2,4, 2015 was the year with the lowest decrease by %15,8. This study also provides important findings to hospital administrators and policy makers in terms of identifying underutilized resources and identifying areas where potential improvements can be made.
