Abstract:

With the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been undeniable changes in the various layers of society. In addition to the coronavirus’ health impact, one of the areas that pandemic feels most has been the economy. The entire world, along with the closures and measures taken with the pandemic and the burden of the health sector, the national economies have also suffered great damage. This article aims to understand these effects on a domestic basis, beyond understanding the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on a country basis. The data used in the article is obtained from a research conducted in Istanbul with the support of TUBİTAK in 2020. In this study, the ways in which households with different levels of social vulnerability experience the pandemic; with social, economic, demographic factors, the access to health and corporate services in the framework of themes. This article focuses only on the economic dimension and evaluates the experience of the households in the economic life, in the context of the occupied job/profession, unemployment, work status in the pandemic, loss of employment in the pandemic, the need for economic support, from who/where the economic support was received or to whom the economic support was given. In this direction, according to the social vulnerability index score of Istanbul, a total of 441 people over the age of 18 living in the districts of "crushing", "middle-over-crushing", "middle-sub-crushing" and "non-crushing" and the number of data collected from the phone surveys conducted in the first 6 months of the pandemic have been applied. The most fundamental conclusion of the article is that the economic dimension of the pandemic experience is being shaped by the pre-pandemic conditions. The article showed that the economic effects of the pandemic are deepening as the household’s vulnerability is increasing.
