Abstract:

According to the United Nations (2023) report, it is estimated that approximately 6 billion people will live in cities by 2030. Thus, there are discussions about the importance, advantages, disadvantages, future, and sustainability of urban agriculture for the food needs of the increasing population. In Turkey, urban agriculture has been studied in fields such as Landscape Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning, Agricultural Engineering, etc., but it has not received enough attention in Geography. The aim of this study is to determine the categories and themes by analysing the articles containing the words “urban agriculture” and “geography” in the WOS database and to prepare a ground that will contribute to future research orientations towards this concept. Unlike other studies, this article is the first study that deals with geography and urban agriculture in the context of bibliometric analysis. In the study, academic publications on urban agriculture in the field of geography were scanned in the Web of Science Core Collection database. This database was searched on 10 April 2023 with the keywords “urban agriculture” and “geography”. As a result of the query, 129 publications were reached. Among these, “article” and “all years” were selected as the type of publication and filtered. After filtering, 114 articles were analysed by content analysis and then three periods consisting of different themes were formed. While the subject of urban agriculture was of an introductory nature in the period before 2005, it turned into a definition in the 2005-2015 period and a critical dimension in the post-2015 period. While the number of publications increased until 2018, the agenda changed due to Covid-19. However, it is predicted that studies on this subject will increase in the future. As a result, in this article, the development of articles on urban agriculture in the field of geography from past to present, the categories and themes addressed, how the relationship between urban agriculture and geography is handled by geographers, the most productive countries in the field of urban agriculture and the number of publications by years were determined.
