Bir malda zekâtın vacip olması için bir takım şartlar gereklidir. Bu şartlardan biri de malın üzerinden kamerî bir yılın geçmesidir ki buna Türkçede yıllanma denmektedir. Bu şart belli bir süre zarfında ancak nemasını veren hayvanlar ve ticaret eşyası gibi mallarda gerekli, kendisi nema olan toprak mahsulleri ve meyveler gibi mallarda gerekli değildir. Yeni ele geçen paranın zekâtında bu şartın gerekli oluşu konusunda ihtilaf söz konusudur. Yıllanma şartının gerekli olduğuna dair âyet bulunmamakta, konu hadis rivayetleri ve sahabe görüşlerine dayanmaktadır. Konuyla ilgili aynı anlama gelen dört hadis rivayeti bulunmaktadır. Ancak bu hadislerin sıhhati sübut bulmadığından sahabe konu üzerinde icma etmemiş, konuyla ilgili sahabeden iki görüş nakledilmiştir. Sahabenin ekseriyeti yıllanma şartını gerekli görürken, bir kısmı da gerekli görmemiş, kişinin eline bir nisap miktarı mal geçince yıllanmasını beklemeden zekâtının verilmesi gerektiğini söylemiştir. Üçüncü bir görüşe göre ise kişi şayet yıl içinde kazandığı parasını harcamayıp yılsonunda zekâtını veriyorsa bunun bir mahzuru yoktur, ancak yılsonunu beklemeden parasını harcamak istiyorsa, parası da bir nisap miktarı veya daha fazla ise parasını harcamadan zekâtını vermesi gerekir.
