751 Talas Savaşı’ndan sonraki süreçte Türklerin İslâmiyet’i kabul etmesi, sadece bir din değişikliği olarak gerçekleşmemiş, aynı zamanda onların kültürel hayatına da etki etmiş ve Arap Alfabesi’ne geçişleri başlamıştır. Arap Alfabesi ile Türk Alfabesi arasında ses farklılıklarının giderilmesi yoluna gidilmiş ve bu bağlamda Türkçe’de olup da Arap Alfabesi’nde olmayan sesler için Farsça’da olduğu gibi bazı harflere noktalar eklenerek bu sorun çözülmüştür. Böylece Arap Alfabesi, daha sonra kurulan Türk İslâm devletlerinde de kullanılmaya başlanmıştır. Osmanlı Devleti’nde Arap harflerinin ıslah edilmesi tartışmaları İkinci Meşrutiyet Dönemi’nden çok önce başlamıştır. İkinci Meşrutiyet Dönemi’nde Arap harflerinin ıslahını savunan aydınlar olduğu gibi, bu harflerin tamamen terk edilip yerine Avrupa devletlerinin kullandığı Latin harflerinin kabul edilmesini savunanlar da olmuştur. Batılılaşmanın ve ilerlemenin önündeki engel olarak Arap Alfabesi’ni gören batıcı aydınlar ile Arap Alfabesi’ni Müslümanların arasındaki güçlü bir bağ olarak gören İslâmcı aydınlar arasındaki kalem savaşları Meşrutiyet Dönemi basınında görmek mümkündür. Hurufat meselesindeki bu tartışmalar, Cumhuriyetin ilanından sonra daha da artarak devam etmiş ve nihayet 1928’de Latin Alfabesi’nin kabulüyle sonuçlanmıştır. Bu çalışmada, Cumhuriyet Dönemi’nde gerçekleşen önemli inkılâplardan olan Harf İnkılâbı öncesinde hurufat meselesi hakkında Meşrutiyet Dönemi aydınlarının basın, kitap ve risaleler aracılığıyla savundukları görüşler incelenmiştir.
In the period after the 751 Talas War, the acceptance of Islam by the Turks was not only a change of religion, but also affected their cultural life and their transition to the Arabic Alphabet began. The sound differences between the Arabic Alphabet and the Turkish Alphabet were eliminated, and in this context, this problem was solved by adding dots to some letters for the sounds that are in Turkish but not in the Arabic Alphabet, as in Persian. Thus, the Arabic Alphabet began to be used in the Turkish-Islamic states that were established later. Discussions on reforming the Arabic letters in the Ottoman Empire started long before the Second Constitutional Period. In the Second Constitutional Period, there were intellectuals who advocated the reform of the Arabic letters, and there were also those who advocated the abandonment of these letters and the adoption of the Latin letters used by the European states. It is possible to see the pen wars between the western intellectuals, who see the Arabic Alphabet as an obstacle to westernization and progress, and the Islamist intellectuals, who see the Arabic Alphabet as a strong bond between Muslims, in the press of the Constitutional Period. These discussions on the issue of lettering continued increasingly after the proclamation of the Republic and finally resulted in the adoption of the Latin Alphabet in 1928. In this study, the views defended by the intellectuals of the Constitutional Period on the issue of type before the Alphabet Revolution, which was one of the important revolutions in the Republican Period, were examined.
