Abstract:

The events experienced by individuals and societies throughout history have been expressed with different types of narrative arts. Among these arts, the art of the novel, which emerged in the 17th century, seems to be the most suitable type for expressing historical events in a literary style. But because it is a human art and is not based on documents, the novel cannot be purified from the point of view of the author. For this reason, the novel has been used for different purposes besides artistic purposes. One of the authors who carried the Algerian people's experiences to the art of novel is Abdul Wahab Issawi. Abdul Wahab Issawi wrote a novel called Spartan Diwan, which tells about the occupation of Algeria by the French in 1830 and what happened before it was under Ottoman rule. In this study, the work named Spartan Diwan was examined in terms of technique in order to determine to what extent the author used the rules of the art of the novel, and thematically in order to determine which subjects were covered in the novel. It is aimed to determine the artistic value of the work and to determine the level of the art of novel in Arabic literature. The study is important in terms of revealing to what extent ideologies can affect the art of the novel.
