Abstract:

The purpose of this research is to examine the relation between men’s exposure to violence and use of violence; and to reveal men’s perceptions about the effects of violence. In order to illuminate the phenomenon of male violence in a holistic way and in depth, the method of research chosen is qualitative and the research model is the phenomenological method. The sample of the study consists of 19 men selected using purposeful sampling according to the maximum diversity method. The characteristics of the participants forming the sample of the study vary according to age, economic status, level of education, family environment and parental attitudes. The data used in this research was obtained through interview and a semi-structured interview form. Coding based content analysis is used to analyze the data. The results vary according to where the participants grew up, their economic and educational status and parental attitudes. According to results of the research, in daily life 63% said they were “isolated from people” and 42% of cases there was “psychological distress and emotional pain.” Every participant had been exposed to violence and used violence at least once. 74% of the participants stated that they were exposed to violence from “their father” and 84% said that they were exposed to violence in terms of “slapping”. 79% of the participants use violence against “their children” and 63% of them used “physically hit” others. The findings obtained from this research are discussed in the context of literature and some suggestions are made, such as raising awareness about violence, the damage caused.
