Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to determine the qualifications that teachers candidates who are studying in the Turkish and English teaching bachelor's programmes should be in the field of Turkish teaching as a foreign language, the knowledge of the field in Turkish teaching as a foreign language, the knowledge of the teaching methods and the skill dimensions. In this category of studies, the focus group conversation (OGG) technique was applied.  In the process of data collection through focus group conversation, a semi-configured conversation form developed by researchers has been used. The research study group, in the 2018-2019 educational year of the 3rd and 4th of the Graduate Programs in Turkish and English Teaching at a State University in the Mediterranean Region in Turkey. There are 26 teachers in their classes. The obtained data is studied and classified using the content analysis technique. According to the results of the research, participants have found that they are in an agreement on the fact that the teacher who will be involved in the YDTO processes in general is the master of the knowledge of the Turkish field, that the knowledge and application in the context of the teaching methods are competent and that a tool language should be known. In the size of managing the YDTO processes, the candidates for Turkish teachers feel insufficient in the context of the language teaching methods, while the candidates for English teachers feel insufficient in the context of the knowledge of the Turkish field. Participants have expressed that in general the programs they receive training should increase the classes dedicated to the YDTO processes and emphasize the practical courses for the YDTO processes. On the other hand, they have emphasized that the opening of a license program in this area, because the YDTO is a separate special area, will be a long-term solution to the problems faced in the YDTO processes.
