Abstract:

One of the most important aspects of our culture is the ad. The name of the land (Toponimi), which is one of the branches of Adwinism, has gained more importance in terms of making a part of the land home. Thro history, the Turkish nation, which has founded a small hundred and more states in the various regions of the world to become a great state, and has had a superior culture, has had the need to make these places a country by giving new names to the mountains, eaves, rivers and rivers that they encounter in their wide geography. Our ancestors who entered Ana­dolu also soon gave the land on which we lived new names that carried the mark of their own cultures. Some of the names that remained from the ancient Anadolu civilizations either remained the same or got a new form of speech and writing in Turkey. For people, mostly, have explored the origin of the land names in the area where they live, and have sought to know why that name was placed, and to establish a harmony, a proximity between the land where they live with the name. It has formed a chain of beliefs and legends that have been told from mouth to mouth over the centuries on the land names around it. In fact, the land names have been influenced not only by the human communities that settle there, but from time to time by the natural environmental characteristics of that region, that is, by the structure of the land, by the climate conditions, by the plant cover and by the living animals, by the economic and cultural products. Under this effect, the places are called. The name of the earth and the people living on it have gained integrity with the environment. The Birecik district connected to the province of Shanlıurfa is located in the Middle Fırat Division of the Southeast Anadolu Region. In this study, the village names in the Birecik district were tried to be classified by a geographical point of view according to their physical, human and economic characteristics. At the same time, it is intended to contribute to the study and determination of the importance of the sources of land names, which are one of the elements that make up the cultural wealth of our country.
