Abstract:

Internship is a work-to-work training method that enables students to concrete and strengthen the theoretical knowledge they obtain in the school and the practices they have seen in the laboratory environments, in their real business life, and to acquire skills and experience accordingly (Öz, Özden and Özkuk, 2014; Ruhanen, Robinson and Breakey, 2013; Wasi and Lodhi, 2015). Internships are also the period in which students first meet with their work lives. The role of internship periods and especially summer internships in the definitions of the field they’re going to work and in loving their professions is great. With the idea of giving students practice and experience, it is mandatory to do summer internships at universities. There were some problems arising from this obligation. For this purpose, the opinions of students studying in the Iğdır Health Services Professional Higher School programs are aimed at the identification of problems in this area and the development of suggestions for the solution of these problems. The study is a study in the visual scan model, and was done with the survey technique. In the study, students’ opinions and suggestions about summer internship were collected with quantitative data. Working group, Iğdır Health Services Professional High School; 349 students who study in Children's Development, First and Emergency Aid, Medical Laboratory, Medical Documentation and Secretariat, Environmental Health, Home Patient Care and Elderly Care programs and completed their summer internship. The study did not take examples, it was sought to reach the whole universe. The data in the study was obtained by the survey form created by Hançer Aydemir (2016). The study found data from 349 current surveys, using the SPSS 22 program, percentage and frequency distribution, cross table (Crosstab), Kruskal-Wallis and correlation analysis. According to the results of the study, 73.4% of students who undergo summer internships said they did not receive any information during the internships in the institution. As a result of this, 24.3 percent of students said that the stages were considered as a temporary element and 20.2 percent said that the stages were not interested. Students who participated in the study pointed out that the most important factor in the determination of the stages is the place to be staged in the residential area (62.8%). As a result of the correlation analysis, there was a positive and high relationship between the student’s residence area and the stage area (r (349)= .849; p<.01). A large proportion of students (74.2%) found it appropriate to do internships during the summer period, 67% of students contributed to the second class lessons of the internship, and the highest rate (86.0%) of medical laboratory students found that they had this idea. Finally, students have pointed out that in order to make the internships more effective, it is necessary to choose the appropriate internship place (21.9%) and to check the internship place (19.1%) in order to make the internships more effective.
