Abstract:

In this study we will handle Nassif Mallouf’s scientific personality as well as his works about Turkish language and literature. Fifteen works which are derived from different catalogues are explained by their importance and specification as the first examples in our language and literature history.  Mallouf prepared for the first time Turkish French dictionary and phrasebooks multilingual based on Turkish. Most of his works are about language teaching. At the same time we see Mallouf’s important works for Turkish literature. Translations which were made from Nasreddin Hoca are among the first examples for our literature. With the second printing of the work we see that the work is expanded with more anecdotes, proverbs and a Turkish song. Primary purpose of this work is presenting Nassif Mallouf’s Kitâb-ı Der-Hakk-ı Sıbyân ve Sabâvet as the first example of Turkish Children’s Literature. There are some determinations which claims the first date as 1859 with some translated works. But we claim that our Children’s Literature commencement date in Western form is 1850 with Nassif Mallouf’s work.
