Abstract:

The aim of this research is to evaluate the effects of art therapy practices on the elderly people. In this study theater activity was organized within the scope of art therapy. A pilot study was carried out between March-May 2016 and the actual implementation was carried out between March-May 2017. A total of 15 people participated in the survey: 2 elderly residents, 11 young people aged 20-23, 1 nursing home worker, 1 nursing home volunteer. The research data was obtained by in-depth interview technique, which is one of the qualitative research methods after the play was performed. Semi-structured interview questions about the rehearsal process, themselves and other participants during the practice period.It has been observed that the memory of the elderly got stronger,  the self-confidence and life satisfaction were increased, the physical wellness of the two elderly participant improved. In addition, the young people who participated in the study stated that their self-esteem increased, the prejudices they had towards the elderly people disappeared, and the communication with the elderly and among each other became stronger. The study also shows that art therapy contributes positively to generation interaction.
