Abstract:

In this study, gains of elementary social studies course in terms of citizenship and human rights are examined and an answer is looked for the question “How gains about “Citizenship and Human Rights” subjects are given place in Social Studies Education Program?” For this purpose, firstly, considering citizenship and human rights, gains are established with the help of experts. Then, acquisitions of 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th grades are evaluated according to the subjects. In the survey, document analysis is used in order to collect data and descriptive analysis is performed with these data. Findings show that; in the 4th grade Social Studies gains, groups, corporations and social organizations, active participation, being active person in the society themes; in the 5th grade Social Studies gains, groups and corporations, child rights and cultural items gains; in the 6th grade Social Studies gains, economy, human rights, responsibilities and freedoms and democracy themes; in the 7th grade Social Studies gains, communication, mass communication, rights, responsibilities and freedoms, structure and mechanism of government and democracy subjects are found. According to consequences, it is recommended for Social Studies Programs that, sensual and behavioral field gains should also be considered while preparing gains. Also, gains should be prepared at an appropriate level of the minds of the students. Citizenship and human rights gains should be given in a correct order.
