Abstract:

In Turkey, the content and adequacy of work health and safety inspections have been a topic discussed in the past, but the agenda has been busy for a long time after the major work accidents that occurred in coal mines and construction plants. The article, in light of the data contained in the official statistics, aims to evaluate the adequacy of work health and safety inspections in Turkey in a quantitative perspective. Tools and methods: Statistical data are collected using the work statistics published annually by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security and the Social Security Institution’s work accidents and workplace statistics. The data is interpreted by calculating the number and rates of inspections in the mines, construction, metal, land transport and textile workplaces that occurred with the number of workplaces, the number of employees and the most fatal accidents. Consequently, as well as the establishment of a current and applicable legislation to reduce work accidents to an acceptable level in the work life, measures to force the legislation to be implemented must also be taken. In Turkey, the job inspection rates are not sufficient in terms of the workplace and the number of employees inspected. It is necessary to increase the risk rates in risky sectors. Inspections should be planned according to the type and size of the enterprise, resources should be used more effectively. Research and research is needed to improve the effectiveness of the research methods.
