Abstract:

This study aims to determine the lengths of words and sentences of the texts in the 8th class Turkish curriculum and to determine the readability levels of these texts and to study the conformity of the texts to the class level. In this research conducted by the Qualitative Research Methodology, the document examination scheme was used. It used visual analysis in the analysis of data. The results of this analysis showed the phrase and word lengths of the texts, the frequency and percentage values for the findings obtained regarding their readability levels in the form of tables and graphs. To determine the word, phrase length and readability of the texts, the readability formula used by Ateşman (1997), the readability formula adapted from Flesch to Turkish, and the readability formula developed by Çetinkaya (2010) was used. In the study, 22 texts in the 8th class Turkish curriculum book prepared by the MEB Publications were studied, and the research included free reading texts while the poems were kept outside the scope of the research.  The research finds that texts are generally in line with the class level, but that narrative texts are simpler than informative texts, with higher readability levels.
