Abstract:

The historical background, experience, and its proximity to the most eco- nomically important regions of the sector make the Istanbul University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, a significant institution in the field of com- panion animals. Due to the faculty’s importance, this study investigated the demographics and social aspects of veterinarians who graduated from the Istanbul University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and run clinics in the field of companion animals. In this study, the demographics and social aspects of veterinarians were examined. Furthermore, it was aimed to analyze their opinions regarding the faculty, the profession, and the future status of the profession. Data were collected through a face-to-face survey with a total of 238 clinic owners who graduated from the Istanbul University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, between April 2019 and April 2021. Results showed that the professional satisfaction rate was 97.5%, while veterinarians recom- mended veterinary medicine and the companion animal field by 90.2% and 85.7%, respectively. Although the economic, scientific, and technical satisfa- ction rates were high, it is noteworthy that social satisfaction such as work life–private life balance was determined to be quite low. The rate of those who considered their faculty being at the top among other faculties was 16.8% and the rate of those who considered it at the middle level was 39.5%. In the study, 57.7% of the veterinarians stated that they would recommend their faculty. All of the participants stated that the establishment of new faculties in veterinary medicine would not be a good decision for the sector. Considering the fact that only a small group perceived their faculty on top and half of whom recommended their faculty. In order to increase the overall satisfaction of the future graduates of Istanbul University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, comprehensive plans should be developed.
