Abstract:

This study aims to determine discipline problems resulted from students at the vocational schools and the solution to these problems by being based on perceptions of teachers at vocational high school according to variables like gender, seniority, tenure in the current school, being a member of discipline board and field of teaching. The study group consists of 269 teachers at the vocational high schools in Mersin. The data was collected via "Teachers’ Perceptions of Discipline and Practice of Discipline" scale, developed by Güner (2009). In analysis of data, descriptive statistics, t-test and ANOVA were used. According to findings, vocational high school teachers have regarded students’ behaviors like not listening to lectures, talking without permission and indifference to course as primary disciplinary problems. Many negative samples on TV and internet, developmental characteristics of students and family problems are regarded as reasons for behavior disrupting discipline In order to solve these discipline problems, teachers communicate with students' families, and give feedback to stimulate positive behaviors of students, supportstudents to participate in social activities. While there is no statistically significant difference among perceptions of teachers according to variables like gender, field of teaching, seniority, there is a statistically significant difference among perceptions of teachers according to variableslikethe tenurein the current school, being a member ofdiscipline board.
