Erken yaşta evlilik, Yakın Çağ’a kadar çeşitli dinlere mensup toplumların örfünde yer alan bir gerçekliktir. Hz. Âişe’nin erken yaşta evliliği ile alakalı yaptıkları değerlendirmeler karşısında değişik cevaplar arama yoluna gitmişlerdir. Müslümanlardan bazıları erken yaşta evliliği o günün toplumsal vasatı olarak görmüşler, bazıları da yapılan eleştiriler karşısında savunmacı bir refleks geliştirerek Hz. Âişe’nin yaşının daha büyük olduğu iddialarına deliller bulmaya çalışmışlardır. Bu ikinci görüşü savunanlar, Hz. Âişe’nin yaşını büyük göstermeye çalışmakla aslında bir anakronizme düşmüşlerdir. Zira bu konu ile ilgili bir değerlendirme yaparken, bu evliliğin dönemin Arap örfüne uygun yapıldığı, dahası Hz. Muhammed zamanında yaşayan en büyük muhaliflerinin bile bu konuyu gündeme getirmedikleri gerçeğini gözden kaçırmamak gerekir. Early marriage is a reality that has been in the customs of societies belonging to various religions until the Modern Age. Early marriage practices existed in the region and at the time when Prophet Muḥammad was brought up. This established custom continued to be practiced among Muslims after the spread of Islam. We argue that early marriage should be considered in the historical context of the day, starting from the fact that each issue is evaluated in its own context. Prophet Muḥammad, as a member of the society, had marriages in accordance with the customs of the time. His marriage to ʿĀʾisha is the subject of criticism. Muslims have sought different answers in the face of the Orientalists' evaluations about the early marriage of Prophet Muḥammad and ʿĀʾisha. Some Muslims saw early marriage as the social environment of that day, and some developed a defensive reflex in the face of the criticism. They tried to find evidence for discourse that ʿĀʾisha was older. Those who defend this second view have actually fallen into an anachronism by trying to show the age of ʿĀʾisha to be older. Because, while making an assessment on this issue, it is stated that this marriage was made in accordance with the Arabic customs of the period, moreover, it should not be overlooked that even the greatest opponents of Prophet Muḥammad's time did not raise this issue. This article deals with the approaches and attitudes of societies with different religious and cultural structures in the Middle Ages towards early marriage.
