Abstract:

Abstract The study performed in Camagüey municipality aimed at identifying those elements that might be characterizing the system of support to the elderly. A poll was carried out in a group of 200 individuals, out of which 100 were incorporated to Casa de Abuelos (part-time home for the elderly), 50 to Círculos de Abuelos (sports and recreation for the elderly groups), and 50 to Universidad del Adulto Mayor (university for the elderly). Results achieved allow to state that there is a female majority within the system of formal support, for most of their members are women; on the other hand, though all studied supports are transmitted, the main transferences participating in the exchange are the cognitive, emotional and instrumental ones, i.e., those related with care and company.
