Abstract:

The present study has mainly focused on the direct and indirect consequences of acculturation of Chinese English-language students in Pakistan. The study is based on Berry’s Model of Acculturation which explains that acculturation leads towards acculturative stress which finally results in psychological distress. Thus, acculturative stress mediates between acculturation and distress. Mediational model was tested by collecting data from 200 Chinese English-language students in Pakistan. East Asian Immigrant Acculturation, Acculturative Stress Scale and Kessler Psychological Distress Scale were administered on participants. Mediation analysis confirmed the direct and indirect effect of acculturation on psychological distress among Chinese English-language students in Pakistan. The findings confirmed the Berry’s Model of Acculturation and it explained the consequences of use of positive (assimilation and integration) and negative (marginalization and separation) strategies of acculturation in terms of acculturative stress and psychological distress in Chinese English-language students in Pakistan.
