Abstract:

This study has studied the effect of preoperative measurement of vitamin D levels on postoperative developing hypokalcemia. Method and Requirements: Our research was included in the General Surgery Clinic of the University of Sakarya Education and Research Hospital between January 2015 and March 2016 with a benign, malign or thyrotoxic cause and a pre-operative vitamin D level of 106 patients considered as retrospective. The average age of patients is 50.6 (min: 19 max: 82). 94 of the patients are female and 12 are male. When the preoperative vitamin D levels were evaluated in patients with thyroidectomy, 81.1 percent (n: 86) were deficient (<30 ng/dl) and 19.8 percent (n: 21) were normal (>30 ng/dl). In 18.9% of postoperative patients, temporary hypokalcemic symptoms developed, and patients received calcium (Ca) treatment. When factors affecting the formation of hypokalcemic symptoms were studied; age, hyperthyroidism, thyroiditis, parathyroid gland removal and the presence of postoperative hypokalcemic symptoms of the type of operation were not affected, while more hypokalcemic developments were found in patients with <30 ng/dl low vitamin D levels (23,3 % and 0 %) (p: 0,017). RELATED and RESULTATED: As our study and other studies suggests, we consider that every patient who will undergo thyroidectomy surgery should receive a pre-operative assessment of the vitamin D levels and the results are insufficient for each patient to receive a vitamin D replacement.
