Abstract Gynecologist and writer Prof. Dr. Selcuk Erez (b. 1936) holds a privileged place in Turkish literature due to his novels, short stories, and newspaper columns, which reflect his medical expertise. Among the subjects he primarily deals with in his books are the history of medicine and pharmacy, medicinal plants, and folk medicine practices. In his recent autobiographical novel entitled Kissing Was Forbidden, And So Did Thinking (2013), Erez writes about Ord. Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Gustav Liepmann (1878–1939) and Ord. Prof. Dr. Philipp Schwartz (1894–1977), Jewish academics that fled Nazi Germany in the 1930s and began working at the Istanbul University School of Medicine, and discusses their contributions to Turkish medicine. In another book entitled Bodrum Beneath Chios (1996) that was based on the author’s interviews with Ali Cengiz of Bodrum (1903–1987), Erez tells the Hippocrates stories that he heard from Ali Cengiz, as well as those folkloric remedies and medicinal plants used in the Bodrum region. In his book of gathered column writings, Embargos of Our Minds (1988), he offers information not only on a German pharmacy historian, Mr. Helmut Becker (1932–2009) and his doctorate thesis entitled “Medicine and Pharmacy in the Ottoman Fronts during the World War I,” but also on the epidemics that changed the course of history. In this article, Erez’s books’ contributions to history of medicine will be discussed in comparison with current literature.
