Bir kelimenin tek başına ya da cümle içindeki diğer ögeler ile bağlam ilişkisine göre kazandığı her kavram anlam olarak adlandırılmaktadır. Anlam, dilin tabakaları arasında en zor açıklanan bölgedir. Bir kelimenin içinde bulunduğu bağlama göre yeni anlamlar kazanmasına ise çok anlamlılık (polysemy) adı verilmektedir. Bir dilin eskiliğini belirlemede başvurulan ölçütlerden birisi olan çok anlamlılık, anlam biliminin konusudur. Dillerin söz varlığındaki artışa bağlı olarak çok anlamlılıkta da artış gözlemlenmektedir. Bu bağlamda araştırmamızın konusu olan Harezm Türkçesi dönemindeki çok anlamlı yapılar irdelenmiştir. Harezm Türkçesi dönemi eserlerinde sıklıkla kullanılan çık- fiili çok anlamlı bir yapıya sahiptir. Bu çalışmada incelenen Nehcü’l-Ferâdis, Kısasü’l-Enbiyâ, Mu’înü’l-Mürîd, Mukaddimetü’l-Edeb, Hüsrev ü Şîrîn ve Keşfü’l-Hüdâ eserlerinde 860 yerde geçen çık- fiilinin 27 farklı anlamı saptanmış olup ayrıca bu fiil ile oluşturulan deyimleşmiş birleşik yapılar da ele alınmıştır. Çok anlamlılığın dilin en derin zenginliğinin referansı olduğu düşüncesinden hareketle, yalnızca çık- fiilinden tespit edilen farklı anlamlar, Türk dilinin zenginliğini göstermesi bakımından önemlidir.
