Abstract:

This study aims to prove that Ceride-i Havadis, which is described as the first semi-official newspaper of the empire in Ottoman press history studies, was also published in Turkish in Armenian letters approximately two years after its publication in Ottoman Turkish. It will be discussed that the bilingual publication of Ceride-i Havadis, which was issued with the support of the state after the Takvîm-i Vekâyi in the multilingual and multicultural Ottoman Empire with the proclamation of the Tanzimat Edict, why the selection of the Armenian community from non-Muslim subjects for the second publication language, and why the language of the newspaper for the Ottoman Armenian community was Turkish in Armenian letters. The Turkish version of Ceride-i Havadis will be examined for the first time, and presented some examples of the original newspaper will be shared with the reader, by giving information about the concept that entered the Ottoman press history literature as “Turkish Press with Armenian Letters”. Descriptive and qualitative design was used in the study. The language of the press used in the news in the newspapers is out of the scope of this study.
