Günümüzde varlığını sürdüren ve kendisinden söz ettiren pek çok medeniyet vardır. Bu medeniyetler bir kültür veya ilim ekseni etrafında var olmuştur. Tarihe yön veren kişilerin ilme karşı takındıkları tavırlar, ileriki dönemlerde medeniyet ve kültürün gelişimi üzerinde önemli etkiler bırakmıştır. İslam medeniyetinin oluşumunda ilk emir olan “oku!” vardır. Onu Hz. Peygamberin ilim öğrenilmesi ve öğretilmesi konusundaki tavsiyeli izlemektedir. Bu bağlamda, edebiyatçılar da ilim ile ilgili ayet ve hadisler ışığında eserlerinde ilim, ilim öğrenmek, ilim öğretmek, cahillerden ve cehaletten uzaklaşmak konularını eserlerinde işlemişlerdir.
