Abstract:

Dynamic cities are transforming spontaneously or with an intervention in order to adapt to changing conditions. With the urban transformation which has taken place, new urban compositions and functions are included in the spatial organization. The typologies produced affect the process typology in the context of urban morphology. The aim of the research is to examine the intervened urban pattern in comparison with the urban patterns located in its neighbourhood within the framework of typological process and continuity. While the typological process provides planning principles and design codes to urban transformation applications, urban transformation projects may have the risk of radically changing the process typology. In accordance with this interaction, the research method was determined as typo-morphological approach that examines the relationship between architectural type and urban morphology. In the research, Doganbey Urban Transformation Project which has intervened to typological continuity will be examined. It is located in the typological transition zone of historical city centre and, it is iconic because of produced urban pattern after urban transformation. The context of the research includes Bursa Historical City Centre, Reyhan and Doganbey traditional urban patterns. Typological references are important for ensuring the integrity of the urban pattern and preserving the silhouette of the historic city center in all kinds of interventions to be applied in and around the historic city center. As a result of the research, it is seen that urban transformation Project with the sharp break it created in the evolution of types causes typological discontinuity, with the gap-bulk relationship it transforms causes a scale difference that contradicts the historical urban pattern and the damage to urban memory with the change it causes in architectural culture and thus affects urban morphology. As a result, the necessity of urban transformation projects taking place in and around historical city centers to take the typological process as a reference and that it is one of the guiding elements of the typological process reveals the contribution of the study to science.
